First-ever precision spectroscopy of Antihydrogen – using a TOPTICA laser!

CERN scientists have published the first-ever measurement on the optical spectrum of an antimatter atom. A TOPTICA TA-FHG pro was used for the key measurement of this success.

The reported optical spectroscopy of the 1S-2S two-photon transition in hydrogen is a cornerstone of modern atomic physics. Over the last decades, the measurement precision of the transition frequency was improved by several orders of magnitude, allowing tests of fundamental physical theories like quantum electrodynamics in a very simple system.

Now, scientists at CERN have repeated the same experiment with antihydrogen, i.e. an atom consisting of an antiproton a positron. With a TOPTICA TA-FHG pro laser tuned to the transition linewidth around 243 nm, and a few atoms detected, they can already put bounds on the standard model, as reported in Nature.
