The SynViewHead is an all-electronic transmitter and receiver module, based on high-power emitters at 100 GHz or 300 GHz. Employing a frequency modulation technique similar to FMCW radar, a depth profile of a sample is generated. The dynamic range is > 50 dB and the depth resolution is better than 20 µm for any single interface within a +/- 1 mm window. The module is the key component of the 3D terahertz imaging system SynViewScan.

Principle of FMCW ranging. The frequency offset ωoffset between the transmitted (TX) and received (RX) signal is given by Δω x Δt / ts, with Δω = frequency scan width, Δt = round trip time delay, and ts = sweep time per cycle.
