Spectral Coverage of DL DFB

Distributed feedback (DFB) laser systems offer wide tunability, narrow linewidth and high output power in a compact and very rugged setup. In a DFB diode, the frequency selective element – a Bragg grating – is integrated into the active section of the semiconductor. Thus, single-frequency operation and high coherence (coherence length 50 - 200 m) are obtained without any bulk optics, making DFB lasers particularly suitable for use within harsh industrial environments or for airborne applications.

A DFB diode can be tuned by changing either the temperature (typical tuning rate 25 GHz/K) or the operating current (1 - 2 GHz/mA). While current-tuning is favourable for rapid modulation tasks, thermal tuning has the advantage of providing extremely large mode-hop free tuning ranges (up to 1200 GHz).

To make full use of the attractive properties of DFB lasers, TOPTICA Photonics has developed the DL DFB laser system, where the laser diode is placed in our patented ColdPack housing. Four thermoelectric elements serve to stabilize laser temperature, or alternatively rapidly heat or cool the diode (temperature range 0-50 °C). State-of-the-art control electronics guarantee low-noise performance and maximum flexibility to adapt the system to the user’s requirements.
DFB lasers are available at a wide range of wavelengths, including 780 nm, 785 nm, 852 nm, 895 nm, 935 nm and 1064 nm. Applications include alkaline spectroscopy (Rb, Cs), laser cooling, gas detection (O2, H2O) and the generation of tunable Terahertz (THz) radiation.
