In the past, the output of semiconductor lasers was limited and insufficient for a variety of applications. The facets of single-mode laser diodes (typically 1 x 3 ìm) suffer optical damage at high power levels, whereas with larger facets the desired spatial mode properties cannot be maintained. Powerful tunable CW light could thus only be generated with vast solid-state lasers or dye ring laser systems alongside with expensive pump sources.
TOPTICA managed to overcome these limitations with the development of the tapered amplifier TA 100. This laser system, introduced in 1998, offers not only high power, but also excellent beam quality and an extremely narrow linewidth. Researchers further benefit from convenient tunability, lowest operational costs and long lifetimes. |
