Atom Cooling and Trapping / BEC |

High quality laser systems are a key requisite for most atom cooling and trapping experiments as well as for experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates or degenerate Fermi gases. The lasers are mainly used for:
- Doppler laser cooling
- Magneto-optical trapping
- Sub-Doppler laser cooling
- Atom optics & atom lithography
- Optical trapping
- Optical pumping
- Coherent state manipulation
- Detection

The atom light interaction, which is the basis of the mentioned applications, strongly depends on the difference between laser frequency and atomic resonance frequency and on power. Hence typical laser requirements are:
- Small laser linewidth / long coherence length
- Tunability to the desired frequency (and also around it)
- Low sensitivity against acoustical noise and temperature variations
- Locking options to a well defined frequency
- Powers in the range of mW to a few W
The repertory of interesting atoms contains many species. Since each of these species shows characteristic transition frequencies, many different wavelengths from the deep UV to the NIR are needed. Hence various kinds of laser systems have to be used. Good to have one partner for this. TOPTICA offers diode laser based systems in the range of 205 nm to 2800 nm with powers up to 2 W. This allows for working with typical elements like:
Hydrogen (H), helium (He), lithium (Li), neon (Ne), sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), aluminium (Al), argon (Ar), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), krypton (Kr), rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr), silver (Ag), indium (In), xenon (Xe), cesium (Cs), barium (Ba), samarium (Sm), dysprosium (Dy), erbium (Er), ytterbium (Yb), mercury (Hg), francium (Fr) and others.
