TOPTICA's scientific diode laser systems with many fascinating applications.
Wherever one needs a high quality, narrow linewidth laser, TOPTICAs products are the first choice. From the laser point of view, many demanding experiments are performed in quantum optics and spectroscopy. Quantum optics and spectroscopy are amongst the most exciting and growing research areas in
physics, awarded with three Nobel prizes in the last ten years (1997, 2001, 2005).
They are used to test basic principles in physics, e.g. the value and the time independence of fundamental physical constants, the special and the general theory of relativity or quantum mechanics. They also have large impact on daily life. |

High precision frequency measurements on cold atoms or trapped ions give time and length standards and are improving the resolution of global positioning systems. Spectroscopic trace gas analysis is used to measure pollution or to determine the age of ancient material or ground water.
Atom interferometers are used to measure gravity (gravimeters) or rotations (gyroscopes) with unpreceded accuracy. Gravimeters are applied for earth quake and volcano eruption research, they help finding natural resources or hidden subterrestrial structures and test earth tide models.
Gyroscopes are used in airplane and satellite navigation. Experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates or degenerate Fermi gases – in both cases dilute trapped atomic clouds which are a billion times colder than the coldest place in outer space – improve our knowledge on condensed matter and superconductivity. They can form new states of matter that never existed before and may also be used for quantum computation.
Quantum computers replace each bit of a classical computer by a quantum bit. Using quantum superposition, the calculating power can be increased enormously. Especially laser-cooled ions are very hot candidates for such quantum computers. The common requirements for quantum optics and spectroscopy at the leading edge of research are highest quality continuous wave laser systems at the leading edge of research. They have to be available at many different wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. The laser system have to be precisely tunable and show smallest linewidths. Very often powers in the 100 mW to 2 W range are necessary. Successful implementation of such "scientific" laser systems in experiments and applications requires intelligent and high quality locking electronics.
TOPTICA provides world leading diode laser systems with the broadest wavelength coverage. New CW laser products address so far unavailable wavelengths in the deep UV with more than 100 mW output power. In the visible and in the near infrared, semiconductor amplifier laser systems boost lower power diode lasers up to 2 W. Easy handling is combined with best performance and reliability in a new generation of grating stabilized diode lasers and in innovative premium intelligent digital locking electronics. |
