The TO-3 Adapter with Integrated TEC and Thermistor: ColdPack
The only available TO-3 adapter for 9 mm and 5.6 mm laser diodes with integrated thermoelectric cooler.

The ColdPack adapter-kit adapts any standard 9 mm or 5.6 mm laser diode housing into a TO-3 style package with integrated thermistor and thermoelectric coolers.

For a variety of applications, simple heat sinking of a laser diode is not sufficient. In more severe cases full thermal control of the laser diode is required. However, standard laser diodes are mostly built into 9 mm (SOT-148) or 5.6 mm (TO-18 or MG) packages, and are not equipped with integrated coolers. To overcome this limitation, TOPTICA Photonics has designed its patented ColdPack adapter-kit; four thermoelectric elements serve to stabilize the laser temperature or rapidly cool/heat the diode, as is required by the application in mind.

The actual temperature can be monitored online by means of an integrated thermistor (10k NTC). The built-in laser diode can easily be exchanged. For ultimate temperature stability, we recommend to use the ColdPack in conjunction with our Diode Laser Temperature Control DTC 110, one of the controller modules of our DL 100 Diode Laser Series.

The ColdPack enables thermal shifting of the emission spectrum of a laser diode (typical temperature dependence of the wavelength of GaAs diodes: 0.3 nm per °C). When used in an external cavity configuration, the accessible wavelength range may thus be increased while maintaining continuous single-frequency operation of the laser. Moreover, the ColdPack lends itself for convenient frequency tuning of Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser diodes.
