Laser Coherence Control:
LCC
Stand-alone modulation source for laser linewidth broadening

  • Linewidth broadening of external-cavity and DFB diode lasers (GHz ranges possible)
  • Adjustment of coherence lengths down to few cm
  • Up to 28 dBm (0.6 W @ 50 Ohm) output
  • Stand-alone module with separate power supply

Applications
  • Spectroscopy of Doppler-broadened absorption lines
  • Optical pumping of metastable Helium-3 (1083 nm)
  • Seeding of high-power fiber amplifiers, avoiding nonlinear effects
Application coherence control in spectroscopy.

TOPTICA's new Laser Coherence Control module LCC is a stand-alone modulation source, designed to broaden the spectral profile of external-cavity or Distributed Feedback (DFB) diode lasers. This allows the researcher to tailor the coherence length of a his laser to any value between 100 m and a few cm.

Whilst measurements in precision spectroscopy often require narrowest possible laser linewidths, there are various tasks that demand just the opposite: increasing the spectral line of a diode laser in a well-controlled way, in order to match the laser emission e.g. to the Doppler-broadened absorption profile of gaseous molecules or atoms. The LCC accomplishes just that: via a dedicated current modulation scheme, the spectral output of an ECDL or DFB laser is broadened, while its tuning properties are maintained.

The compact unit provides a modulation output of up to 28 dBm (0.6 W @ 50 Ohm), which can be attenuated in steps of 1 dB by dip switches on the front panel (0 .. –61 dB). The output is fed to an AC-coupled modulation port of the DL 100, DL pro or DL DFB laser head.

Using a TOPTICA DFB laser @ 852 nm in conjunction with the LCC, spectral widths up to 3 GHz were realized, corresponding to a minimum coherence length of only 4 cm. With TOPTICA's high-bandwidth locking modules FALC 110 and DigiLock 110 on one side, and the LCC on the other side, the linewidth and coherence length of our tunable diode lasers can thus be varied over more than eight orders of magnitude.
